Citizen Science
Citizen science is the direct collaboration between researchers and the public to execute scientific projects and collect information for conservation studies. As part of our activities we have developed several citizen science initiatives. Specially trained local volunteers with Galapagos National Park information use sightings forms and future app to record and upload marine mammal sightings in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Observations include weather, behavior and anthropogenic interactions. Serves as an important resource for the Galapagos Science Center collaborative programs that works to check the conservation status of the archipelago’s emblematic species and provides long-term information of endemic species as well as general patterns of pinnipeds distribution in all archipelago. Getting members of the public to volunteer for us, we’re not just helping to save Galapagos species – we’re also giving people the opportunity to be close to these amazing animals in the wild and engaging in the science, whilst raising their awareness and collecting vital information that helps us work towards solving the problems these species face.
